Does that Online Casino have Terrestrial Presence?

12 Apr 2006

There aren't many ways to ensure that an online casino won't take your money and make a run for it, given half the chance. Of course, there are ways and means to lower the risk of being ripped off by an online casino. These include checking for an eCOGRA seal on the site, making sure that the payout rates at the online casino fluctuate and hearing about the site from fellow-gamblers. However, probably the best way to ensure the reliability of an online casino is to check whether it has a land-based "big-brother" - a regulated land-based brick and mortar casino that operates the online version.

The logic is quite simple. If a terrestrial casino has a reputation to maintain, especially if it is regulated, it will not risk this reputation by doing shady dealings through its online casino. Therefore, a gambler would be better off playing at an online casino that is operated by a land-based one. It is hard to find these types of operations in the United States for the simple reason that land-based casinos are not allowed to operate an online casino. However, many reputable casinos in Australia and the United Kingdom have online extensions and gamblers would be wise to check them out.

One thing to take into consideration is that an online casino operated by a reliable land-based casino is hard to come by. Unfortunately, these are few and far between. It might require a bit of sleuth work before the gambler finds the perfect online casino, but it is certainly worth the effort.
