Thais Take their Gambling Habits to the World Cup

8 Jun 2006

On June 9th, the 18th FIFA World Cup tournament will kick off to a brilliant start as thirty-two countries battle it out on the soccer field for the grand title. Millions of people around the world include gambling at casinos - both online and offline - as part of the excitement of the World Cup and the Thai population is very much in on the action. 3.6 million Thais say that they will take up one kind of gambling activity or another during the World Cup and estimates show that this is double the amount of people who took up gambling during the 2004 European World Championships in Portugal.

Polls taken to study the gambling habits of the Thais revealed that 54% of gamblers admitted to have pawned or sold assets in the past in order to pay off previous gambling debts. It is estimated that 14 million baht will be spent on gambling by the Thai population during the World Cup tournament. About a third of the gamblers polled also admitted to have been involved in fights with other gamblers over debts or other matters.

The Thai police are not likely to allow gambling to get in the way of law and order in the kingdom. They have already announced their intention to create 100 task forces to deal with problems arising from gambling during the month-long World Cup tournament.
